Institutional Development of Human Rights Division

The constitution of Pakistan grants fundamental human rights to all its citizens. It provides protection of life, liberty, body, reputation and property of an individual. Pakistan over the last decades has shown great interest and progress towards fulfilling its constitutional and international commitments on human rights, particularly of Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), Convention on the Rights of Children (CRC), UN Convention against Torture along with core convention of the International Labor Organization (ILO).

The Citizens’ Commission for Human Development (CCHD) is under taking a project “Institutional Development of Human Rights Division” in collaboration with The Asia Foundation (TAF) to strengthen the Human Rights Division now the Ministry of Human Rights (MHR) from October, 2008. In this respect, long and short needs of the Ministry of Human Rights has been identified which include, development of data base of Human Rights (HR) cases, training of their staff on collection, sorting, compilation, and data entry of such cases; provision of legal advisor to provide legal assistance to cases of human rights through advising and filing of legal cases, represent MHR in courts and defend HR cases; increasing staff strength; linkages development of MHR with civil society organizations, government departments, parliamentarians and media; capacity building of their provincial/regional and federal officials; development of a long term strategic plan (at-least 5 years plan) for strengthening of MHR; interface with media to advocate and promote human rights; development of a national policy on human rights, etc.
