Human Rights and Peace
CCHD acknowledges that CSOs have a central role in promoting human rights and peace, they also provide essential services and define the interest of the poor in the environment that is often harsh. They come to rescue of the people when there is an urgent need.
CCHD’s Focus
For promotion of human rights and peace, CCHD applies participatory development approach as a process which involves participation of men and women at the village level, building of their knowledge about their legal rights, sensitization and capacity building of police, jail staff, lawyers and media on issues of violence, human rights, role of media etc. The program has three key elements.
- Building knowledge; awareness raising and provision of information
- Empowerment; group identification, capacity development, and provision of information
- Participation; actual involvement of the target group and stakeholders in formulation, implementation and monitoring of human rights projects with networks.
Models are built for escalating snow ball effect and later efforts are placed for its large scale replication.
CCHD’s Achievements
- From 2000 till today some 3,500 women have been provided legal aid and advice and counseling from its eight District Support Centers in Punjab to minimize incidences of violence on women. These centers are, two in Lahore, Bahawalpur, Kasur, Multan, Faisalabad, Sheikupura, and Sialkot. These comprises of lawyers and psychologists.
- Around 300 community opinion leaders, government officials, police, journalists, teachers, lawyers, etc. were provided training on violence, monitoring of violence, Muslim Family Laws, conflict management, women’s rights, networking, counseling and KAP Techniques to establish referral system in communities.
- Approximately 35,000 women have been provided legal education through community seminars.
- CCHD built capacity of 1200 Muslihat-i-Anjuman members in the Bahawalpur and Attock districts to maximize their out reach, problem solving skills and legal literacy for dispute resolution at the local level, particularly for women rights.
- Sensitization programs on women rights for police, jail staff and local government officials are carried out with the support of the 8 District Support Centers of CCHD. Approximately about 1000 officials have been sensitized, which have rresulted in improved access to justice for women.
