Symposium on "Strengthening Democracy in South Asia"

A recently held South Asian Symposium on Strengthening Democratic Practices in South Asia at Convention Centre Islamabad from 27-29 May 2008, was a unique experience as it brought together political scientists from the region and provided them an opportunity to learn from each others experience. It was a collaborated effort of the United Nations Democracy Fund and the Citizens' Commission for Human Development (CCHD). The three day event had 23__ papers on different issues of democracy, held two disccuion forums on "Socio-political movements in South Asia" and "The role of religion in South Asian politics" and showed two documentaries as Journey of Democracy produced by Hina Baig and Dinner with the President by Sabina Sarwar.

A number of parliamentarinas, scholors, journalists, NGO representatives, students and donors attended the three day event. The Symposum was closed by the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Sayed Yousaf Raza Gillani, appreciating the theme and efforts of the presenters and considered it a valuable attempt to harness public opinion.
